Tucson Visit

Well, I am finally getting around to writing about my Tucson Trip that I took with my friend  Mary from Feb 7th to Feb 14th. Actually, I sat down a few days ago and started writing away. I wrote 3 paragraphs about the visit but unfortunately I wasn’t signed in so it all vanished when I tried to save the draft. Ah, well, I learn about blogging every time I sit down at the computer to write.

The Tucson trip was fantastic! I would happily go back tomorrow if I could. Not so much for the Gem shows but for the “real” rock hunting. We went to Tucson to go to the Gem and Mineral shows that are held every year in Jan. and Feb. We went one time before but it was only for a long weekend. We hit the ground running and went to one of the bead shows that was only 5 days long. Only? Most of the shows run for several weeks. We had been to this show before. I had decided before going that beads were definitely on the list. Neither one of use bought much the first day but boy! from then on I sure did! It was so hard to resist all the glittery beads and shiny objects. Actually, I did resist the shiny objects, okay, not all of them. There were 100′s of 1000′s of Chinese crystals everywhere and they were only $1.00 a strand! I didn’t buy a one. I did find something that I have been looking for for quite a while. Briolettes. Little tiny ones. I bought a whole bunch. Did I say a whole bunch?! Now I just need to make something with them.

One the second day we hit Kent’s tools. Awesome! The best tool vendor at the show. The prices were amazing on almost everything and it is so fun to be able to pick something up before you buy it. I did get quite a few tools. I have almost everything I need but there are always those tools you want! I finally got 2 gold pans and a sieve. Though if I will actually ever use the gold pans I don’t know. I did sort of try them out. On one of our rock hounding journey’s we found black sand. Black sand is sometimes associated with gold. Not this time though. I ended up sending home about 2 quarts of it and an assortment of other rocks in a prepaid flat rate USPS shipping box. I messed with the sand as soon as it arrived but *sigh* no gold. It is sure fun to play with though because the sand is magnetic. I have some rare earth magnets and I used those to pull out most the sand before I tried to “pan” for gold. Anyway I digress. I don’t regret buying any of the tools!

One of the other main items I was looking for was turquoise. On the last trip we found several awesome vendors with gorgeous Chinese turquoise, Boulder Turquoise and of course Southwestern turquoise. I SO wish we would have found them first. I’m sure I would not have ended up with so many beads! Oh well, next time I will know. That didn’t stop me from buying lots of turquoise and I mean lots! I have some wonderful stones to work with and probably enough to last many years unless I really get myself in gear. I’ll post some pictures of my “collection” soon. I should have made a pile of all the stuff I bought just for the fun of it but then again I think I might have really freaked out!

The best part was just getting to be with Mary, going to the Biosphere 2, rock hunting and enjoying the sunshine. If we ever get to go again we both know what the main focus will be. Wandering the desert in search of treasure!

Me and Pacific NW winters don’t get along

Well, I haven’t posted in forever. Maybe the new year and having a tablet will help but actually I think that the dreary, sunless and cold (to put it mildly) pacific northwest winters are the culprit. At least it is green. The summers here almost make up for the winters but for a Florida girl it is almost unbearable to not see the sun for weeks at a time. Thank God for technology! I have a therapy sunlamp and take lots of vitamin D3.

I also have a very special trip planned for Feb 7th. A friend and I are going to Tucson for a week! Yahoo! I can hardly wait. We are going to the Gem and Mineral shows. We went 2 years ago but only for a long weekend so we only got to scratch the surface of what was there. This year we have 6 whole days plus our flight arrives late afternoon and we don’t leave until mid-afternoon so that is really another day. There are way too many shows to see all of them but I have been able to figure out a few. The Tucson Bead Show and The Whole Bead Show will be the first stops. They are only for a few days and fortunately our trip covers the same weekend they run. We will also hit a few wholesale shows and the Kino Sports Complex show. After that it’s all gravy. Of course, we may run out of money before we get to see everything anyway. Just a moot point, right?!

After 3 days of trying to get my website store going I think I’m finally making progress. I have decided to use WooCommerce for my store. I bought a WooCommerce theme from ThemeForest.com but for the life of me I can’t figure it out or get it going. I have reverted to my favorite theme, Weaver, and will just use the plugin for now. I’ll probably buy a WooCommerce theme once I get everything figured out. I’ve contacted the USPS to get my very own API (that’s application program interface for those who don’t know). I just looked that up btw. I can’t remember that ever. Maybe now I will. That’s so I can sell my goods and be able to charge exact shipping with live, real time shipping quotes. I love them so I think my customers would too.

I guess it’s time to be off and do something fun. My mind is mush after struggling with the frustrating world of websites. ’til next time.

Could write everyday and rocks

I think I have realized one of the reasons I don’t post too often is because I could write everyday. I think of things all the time to post and just don’t take the time to do it. I have no idea why really except it takes effort and time. I type really fast so that’s not the reason but I do make a lot of mistakes and feel compelled to go back and read every word carefully.

Today I went to town for a visit with a new doctor about a foot issue and we got to talking about rocks. I mentioned that I was going to Tucson in February with a friend and I want to be able to walk and stand for long periods while we are there. He said his daughter is starting to get interested in geology. She is only 10. I have to say it’s really nice to hear that. I guess electronics and gadgets can stifle everything! Rock hounding is just so much fun! It gets you outdoors and to me every rock has a story. Well, in a sense it really does. Around here where I live up on a hill in western Washington my yard is filled with clay and rocks. Did I mention clay? Anyway, whilst (I watch a lot of British tv and read a lot of British books too) digging holes for my rose bushes this summer I found all kinds of interesting rocks. What is especially cool is that they are from glacial till. That is the stuff that is pushed along with a glacier and left behind when it melts. In other words there is no way to know exactly where they come from. However, I understand with all the new technology geologist can determine what area some may have come from. I don’t know maybe it isn’t even new. It is truly fascinating. Next time your outside just ask yourself “where did this soil, dirt, sand, rocks….come from that I’m standing on come from?” I know it isn’t interesting to some, ok well most people, but you never know it may spark you interest.

As I said, I could go on and on and no pictures except one. I recently finished this necklace. This is one that I’m really proud of since I cut, shaped and polished the stone myself.

Back to it

Well I finally got back to working at my jewelers bench again after being “away” for months. I so miss my friends from Yakima. We had “classes” for 4 years together. I put that in quotes because after 2 years I quit taking their money and we started calling it girls night out. Those 2 ladies that kept coming for so long were/are! such an inspiration to me. So much so that I really want to start teaching again. But first I guess I have to look into insurance. Bleh! I hate that part of business.

Here are a couple of pictures of some things I made. I just love the “Lava Lake” necklace. If I say so myself! This is the first piece I’ve finished that has one of the Sunset Chryscollas I cut, shaped and polished. This is fast becoming one of my favorite stones.
